Q&A: Evie Evangelou

F4D's founder Evie Evangelou is launching the organization's new venture, Sustainia Living, this month during The Copenhagen Fashion Summit. The platform's goal is to foster conscious consumption.

VICE: Why does fashion play such a pivotal role in our world today?
Evie Evangelou: Fashion can be as simple as wearing something that makes you feel confident and attractive — or extremely dynamic, expressing culture, time, and evolution. Fashion has always played a pivotal role in the world, past, present, and future

Why do you feel fashion should think about sustainability?
The apparel industry accounts for 10 percent of global carbon emissions and remains the second-largest industrial polluter, second only to oil. Eighty billion pieces of clothing are produced every year. That's 400 percent more than just 20 years ago.

How do you see yourself as an agent of change?
By helping consumers and companies understand the new, value-driven market through Sustainia Living, a fashionable lifestyle choice that was developed by Sustainia and Fashion 4 Development to communicate and excite people about the benefits and possibilities of sustainability.

It's an innovation platform that documents, demonstrates, and communicates the benefits of living sustainably. It is the way forward to a healthier you in a healthier world, beginning with today's lifestyle basics: food, fashion, and fitness and well-being. Daily choices of what you eat, what you wear, and how you take care of yourself impact not only your life but the planet and the others you share it with. Inspiring and motivating individuals to be conscious consumers, to develop conscious brands, and to adopt conscious business practices is the goal of Sustainia Living.

What kind of change do you hope to be a part of through your life and work in this industry?
My hope is to create much broader global awareness and educate consumers to make wiser choices.

What encouragement would you give someone who's just waking up to the impact fashion has on the environment and on the people behind the products?
We are in the process of evolution for the better, and if we all contribute our part, the future looks bright.
