Black-ish's Marsai Martin Will Star In and Executive Produce Her Debut Film

The premise of Little is relatable to probably everyone: a woman finds herself stressed out by the pressures of adult life. But unlike most of us dwelling in the simultaneously high-stakes and meaningless void of adulthood, Little grants one woman "the chance to relive the carefree life as her younger self," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Marking her first studio feature, Martin will star as the younger version of the lead character. For now, we're left with some questions: Will Martin's character be transported back in time—like some sort of reverse 13 Going on 30 situation—or will she become her younger self in current day—like an elegantly revised 17 Again? Only time will tell.

In addition to starring in the film, Martin will be its executive producer. If that’s not enough proof of her prodigious talent and ambition, she also came up with the script idea in the first place. Girls Trip screenwriter Tracy Oliver wrote the film's first draft, and Drumline writer Tina Gordon wrote the most recent iteration. Gordon is also slated to direct Little, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For the past four years, Martin has captivated viewers of ABC’s Black-ish as the precocious, adorable daughter of Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson’s characters. Members of Martin’s Black-ish family have joined the Little production team, too, with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris set to produce the film along with Girls Trip’s Will Packer and James Lopez.

After news broke of Little, Martin’s on-screen mom tweeted an overwhelmingly enthusiastic, "Yaaaasssss" to congratulate her on her movie. We at Broadly would like to second that.
