Foba's 'Drop Down' EP is a Labyrinth of Global Bass Sounds

The Montreal-based producer shines on his Them Flavors debut.

Montreal-based 23-year-old Victor Brulé's latest EP as Foba effortlessly captures what we've come to relish about contemporary bass music: that ability to pull sounds from every corner of the dance music world without letting one dominate over the other. Drop Down, a new release issued by Chicago-based collective Them Flavors, has all the disparate global influences that have surfaced over years of the scene's evolution, but woven together in new and surprising ways.

For example, on the track "Let Me Go Deep," there's pitch-shifted patois samples and "Icy Lake"-esque marimba stabs over orchestra hits and Miami bass rhythms, with requisite gun-reloading and police-siren samples for full effect. The result is an eerie, yet fully danceable early-set heater. Similarly, "Do U Like" has the genre-staple R&B vocal cut-up, accompanied by cascading grime strings, rolling 808 hi-hats and claps, and even a double-time tempo change in the last two minutes of the track.

If Foba's stellar range of sounds don't indicate his stylistic pedigree, his affiliations in dance music will. He's a member of French production group Get Monet and the host of their weekly Ustream show. He also has a previous release on new THUMP fav Tessier-Ashpool Recordings. Drop Down will also feature remixes from Them Flavors favorites Equator Club, Kreuger, and Aztek. Clearly, Foba's in good company. Stream the EP above, and get ready to navigate a labyrinth of global club sounds.
