Derek Carr Was Mic'd Up When He Broke His Leg, and Was a Boss About It

Derek Carr broke his leg and was super calm about it, even offering his support to his backup as he was helped off the field.

There's been a lot said about how NFL players are gladiators, some kind of 21st century warriors who play football like it's a deathsport. Maybe. I think robots might be the better comparison. They are robotic in their drive, the way they sublimate into a team, and in their pain tolerance.

Look at Derek Carr. He broke the fibula in his right leg Sunday. Coincidentally, he was mic'd up against the Colts too and the video of the moment is so interesting. He gets hit, he goes down and immediately he starts yelling "It's broke! It's broke!" Except, it's not in panic. He doesn't sound overwhelmed by pain. He just is rushed and matter of fact. Like he wants a doctor out immediately, but also for the Raiders to be ready for the next play with enough warning. That's extraordinary.

Even as he's hobbling off the field—with a broken leg—he's calm and supportive. As Matt McGloin passes by him he offers a reassuring "Finish it off, Matty." And when McGloin says he's got it, Carr says "I know you do, I know you do." It's this robotic insistence on leadership and poise. It's so atypical. And fascinating to watch up close.
