Johnson Ends War of Words with Poirier with First Round Knockout

Michael Johnson had an extra pep in his step as the opening bell rang for his main event clash with Dustin 'The Diamond' Poirier in Hidalgo. Poirier saw his four-fight win streak at lightweight crushed by 'The Menace' who caught him with a well-timed right hand that put him down before he finished off the bout with some grounded shots.

The two exchanged some heated words at yesterday's weigh-in that had Johnson come out of his corner a lot more aggressively than usual, and even after the win he continued to goad Poirier as he was being seen by medics.

The right hook left straight combination came just as Poirier seemed to be getting comfortable, and after the bout, Johnson used his post-fight interview to criticize Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz's epic encounter at UFC 202.

"I'm just coming in here just showing people that I'm serious in this division," said Johnson. "Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz getting paid that money and they're out here scrapping and having a sparring match," Johnson shouted. "I come to finish fights. I come for the kill. Pay me, baby, what's up?

Brunson Blasts Himself in the Title Conversation

Uriah Hall walked straight into a clinch with Derek Brunson in their co-main event. The two pummeled against the fence for the opening two minutes of the fight. While many considered Hall to have the striking advantage of the two, a big left hand from Jackson's fighter introduced the TUF finalist to the floor around three minutes in.

Brunson dived all over the spectacular kickboxer and Herb Dean showed absolutely no hesitation in stopping the fight. His fourth knockout victory in as many outings, the emphatic victory over a well-known opponent should open up a number of possibilities for the Carolina fighter at the top of the bracket.

Dunham Dominates Durable Debutant Glenn

Nobody envied Rick Glenn's situation as he walked into his UFC debut against one of the most established fighters in the lightweight division, Evan Dunham.

Glenn looked close to being finished in the final exchanges as Dunham piled on with a barrage of the strikes, but the UFC newcomer proved to very tough and stayed in the fight until the final bell.

Dunham's higher level of skill was highlighted in the first round as he lit Glenn up with sharp combinations before taking him down. On the ground, his skill level was far superior and it looked all but done until Glenn shuck off a rear naked choke.

As soon as Glenn landed any shots of substance on Dunham in the second round, he found his back on the mat again. Beaten soundly on the feet and the ground, there were no surprised when Dunham was announced as the bout's victor.

Main Card

Following Makhachev and Wade, the 5,000 people in attendance were hoping for an action-packed welterweight affair, but Roan Carneiro's split decision win over Kenny Robertson certainly didn't provide that.

Carneiro looked the more comfortable of the two in the striking exchanges in the first round despite his knockout loss as the hands of co-main eventer Derek Brunson last February.

The crowd began to let their feelings know at the end of the second round after a grappling back and forth between the two. Robertson was taken down, only to sweep Carneiro and land crucial ground and pound from half guard. Although Carneiro scored a sweep and tried to isolate and an arm at the end of the second, Robertson still did enough to win the round.

Carneiro's striking was a lot crisper that Robertson's in the third, which was enough to see him take the split decision win on the night, with one judge going in favor of Robertson.

Islam Makhachev's desire to take Chris Wade down probably cost him the first round of their fight on tonight's main card, and following his knockout loss to Adriano Martins in his last fight, you couldn't really argue with the Russian.

Although Wade took the first with a dominant showing from top position, the American could do nothing more but try to lock up a guillotine in the second as his European foe finished a single-leg. The American took his fair share of licks on the bottom and desperately looked to tie up a leg before the bell sounded to end the round.

Makhachev's ability to establish mount and lock up the back did enough to win him the third round. Wade was exhausted as the Russian controlled him, but the crowd didn't sound too happy with the clash as boos sounded out around the State Farm Arena.

Chas Kelly and Maximo Blanco threw the most optimistic jumping front kicks of the night in their main card curtain jerker, but the scramble that ensued saw the American catch a sneaky anaconda choke that quickly rendered the Brazilian unconscious.

The fastest submission in the history of WEC and UFC has put Kelly back in the win column after another wrestling standout, Darren Elkins, snapped his four-fight unbeaten run with a hard-fought decision back in March at UFC 196. Blanco, on the other hand, was reduced to 4-5 under the UFC banner taking his second loss in a row to the American.

Prelims

Gabriel Benitez bounced back from his first-round knockout at the hands of Andre Fili with a second round submission of Sam Sicilia. Sicilia ate a series of big leg kicks in round one prompting him to dive on a takedown at the opening of round two. However, Benitz locked up a standing guillotine which quickly forced the tap from Sicilia.

Belal Muhammad claimed his first UFC win in one-sided showing against Augusto Montano. The former Titan FC champion took an easy takedown in the third and rained down shots until Herb Dean stopped the contest.

Antonio Carlos Junior knew he had it all to do after having a point harshly taken due to an illegal blow to a downed opponent in round one. However, in the third round, Carlos Junior managed to establish a rear naked choke on his opponent to secure the win.

To open the prelim card, José Alberto Quiñonez took a decision win over Joey Gomez after nearly a year on the sidelines. Quiñonez's wrestling dictated the pace of the bout, with Gomez unable to get his game going under the stellar pressure of Quiñonez.

Fight Pass Prelims

Randy Brown, of 'Looking for a Fight' fame, bounced back from the first loss of his professional career with a third round submission of Erick Montano. The duo split the opening two rounds before Montano placed his head perfectly into Brown's choke in the third round, which prompted the tap from a guillotine.

A blow thrown at the end of the second round cost Alejandro Perez a win against Albert Morales in the opening bout of the night. The shot came at the end of the second bell cost Perez a point, and in the end, the bout was deemed a draw.
