SUNY Geneseo Women's Basketball Player and Hockey Player Killed in Murder-Suicide

Two Geneseo student athletes were killed in a grisly murder-suicide over the weekend.

Three people were found dead in off-campus housing near SUNY Geneseo on Monday morning. Kelsey Annese, 21, a member of the women's basketball team, and Matthew Hutchinson, 24, a member of the hockey team, were stabbed to death in an apparent murder-suicide, police say, by Colin Kingston, 24, who was found dead in the same room, also fatally stabbed. Police also found a large knife in the room, which Kingston allegedly brought with him.

Kingston—who attended Geneseo and played basketball between 2009-13, but did not graduate—and Annese reportedly dated for three years before recently breaking up. According to Geneseo Police Public Information Officer Jeffrey Szczesniak, "There was some indication Mr. Kingston was very upset with the recent breakup. He had made some suicidal comments to several people, but no actual threats to harm Miss Annese." Early Sunday morning, Kingston showed up at Annese's house "very upset," found her with Hutchinson, and killed them both.

Police were alerted to the situation because Kingston called his father in between killing Annese and Hutchinson and killing himself.

Kingston's father called the cops in the wee hours Sunday, telling them his son "called him from an unknown number" and said "he murdered his girlfriend…and he's also going to kill himself," according to audio from authorities. That call led officers to the house of horrors, which is shared by several members of the school's women's basketball team. There is no sign of forced entry, police said.

Four other people were in the house at the time and apparently didn't hear anything, but given the timing of the attack and the layout of the house, they may have slept through the entire thing.
