Liverpool Stun QPR In Nutso Stoppage-Time Flurry

Liverpool beat QPR in bonkers stoppage time that saw three goals scored, the final one an own goal for QPR.

The final five minutes of this game were positively bananas and that goal up top was the game-winner. The score was tied 1-1 heading into stoppage time after an 87th minute goal from Eduardo Vargas equalized for QPR. The Rangers were hopeful the late goal would earn a draw after Richard Dunne spotted Liverpool a 1-0 lead with an own goal in the 67th minute. The insanity was only beginning at Loftus Road, though.

Just seconds into the added time, Liverpool seemed to have recaptured the three points off a great goal from Philippe Coutinho, slashing between QPR defenders and tucking it just inside the far post.

Seconds later, QPR earned a corner kick, conceded by Raheem Sterling, and Vargas (again) scored with a header on a perfect ball that scooted between Joe Allen's legs on the line. The goalkeeper tried to keep out, but goal line technology confirmed it had crossed. For a brief moment it appeared QPR had stolen back a point and earned a draw.

But that would not be a nutso stoppage-time flurry, would it? No, it would not. QPR earned another set piece and a chance to steal three points. This time it was a free kick that they tried, unsuccessfully, to dump inside the penalty area. In the top GIF, you can see Liverpool take control and moved up field for a final push.

Coutinho again factored in the goal, with a perfect ball to Raheem Sterling. Mario Balotelli was running alongside Sterling across the way and it seemed to be a ready-made opportunity for him—though perhaps not, as he had missed a similarly wide-open net earlier in the match—but it never made it that far. Steven Caulker hit Sterling's cross into the center of net for an own goal and a 3-2 Liverpool win.
