Alex Smith Avoids a Flurry of Sacks on One Play, Keeps Chiefs in Game

Alex Smith has wheels.

Chances are the Chiefs are probably going to lose, but they are going down swinging and Alex Smith is using his wheels to pitch in. On third-and-seven from the 23, Smith slipped out of roughly 87 sacks—he even avoided getting sacked by his own lineman—and scrambled through the pocket and found Jason Avant downfield for a 26-yard gain.

If the Chiefs do wind up coming back to win, this will be the play people single out as "the turning point."

The play got Kansas City inside Patriots territory and they later kept the drive alive with a fourth down conversion (but took the yardage on a New England penalty instead) in the red zone. On the next play, Smith found Albert Wilson for a pretty sliding touchdown. It cut the Patriots lead to 21-13 late in the third quarter.
