Run It!

It isn't easy to give up on stability and take the leap to pursue your passions. At age 32, director and photographer Rory Kramer tells us what it was like leaving his full time job and what his daily life is like now.

All my life I had been making videos and doing photography, but I mostly did it for fun. It was never something I was able to take on full time.

Just two years ago, I was turning 30 and decided to make a big leap by quitting my full-time job of four and a half years to pursue a life of visual art. It wasn't an easy decision, but I knew I needed a change.

Since then, it's been a crazy ride! I went from a full-time job to working with artists such as Krewella, 3LAU, Martin Garrix, The Chainsmokers, making a music video for Avicii based on my life, to becoming Justin Bieber's personal videographer/photographer. I have been fortunate to travel around the world, meet a lot of inspiring people who I get to create amazing things with as well as give insight to from my journey.

On my days off, I usually head to Indiana to hang out with my family. There typically isn't much sitting around. Thankfully I have the Canon EOS 80D DSLR to experiment with and capture my life at home this time around.

Everyday, I usually begin with getting up early, around eight, get coffee, and try to decide what to do with my day. Before I start any other activities, I take a long, peaceful bike ride around the 6 mile lake we live on with my mom and dad. After that, we usually play a card game.

After annoying my parents all that I can during the game, I text my friends to line up different lake activities for the day. Once we hit the lake, we wakeboard, surf, jump off boats and try to come up with other crazy ideas to film and take photos of.

Here's my dad and I taking a quick break during our long bike ride just enjoying our surroundings.

We saw this ledge in the middle of a field on our way to breakfast and decided to stop. It's the ugliest thing but the beauty is the nature around it.

Every time I come home kids from around the lake hit me up asking if I want to go surfing and film our adventures. Some are kids I have never met or had a conversation with, but since we all are from the same lake, we just click and get along.

In this photo we were driving home on the boat to beat the storm. To you, this photo might be a guy driving through a storm. To me, it's my dad battling cancer. The storm represents the cancer in his life but the smile on his face shows how this fatal disease won't stop him from living and loving his life.

After a long and eventful day, around dinner, I come home to spend it with my parents and talk about life and catch up on everything that's been happening. After dinner we usually have brownies and ice cream and play another card game. I love spending time with my family because usually I'm often running around the world or working on my next projects.

Once my parents go to bed, I get back to my laptop and give myself about an hour or so to go through photos, edit them and add footage I've shot to videos I am working on. When finished, I either go on a night lake cruise with my friends or go take star photos since there is not much light pollution here. After all is said and done I crawl into bed around 1am and crash before starting my next adventure all over again the next day.

I have always been afraid of the dark, but it has always intrigued me. I love to take my camera to spots I have seen hundreds of times during the day to see it in the night. The Canon EOS 80D worked amazingly in low light.
