JAY-Z Has a Hyphen in His Name Again, in Case You Were Itching to Know

He almost has Puff Daddy beat for name changes.

Like many rappers of his stature, Sean Carter is a man of substantial nomenclature. The various permutations of Jay-Hova take up a good portion of these, with "Hovito" being both the best and worst. Jay changed his main name from Jay-Z to Jay Z (or JAY Z) in 2013 during the promo campaign for Magna Carta Holy Grail. He has been hyphenless since, but this has all been upended once again today.

As Pitchfork reports, you can now call Mr. Carter JAY-Z. So, it's the same as it was before, but all-caps like 70 percent of modern acts do now in order to presumably stand out in festival billing and social media feeds. JAY-Z could have gone all the way and made it into JY-Z, so we should be thankful. This extremely important news comes ahead of JAY-Z's new album 4:44 and the birth of JAY-Z and Beyoncé's twins, who ironically remain nameless to the public as of this posting. JAY-Z should really be more considerate of what JAY-Z's fans want to hear. JAY-Z.

Phil believes in the annoying power of semantic saturation. He's on Twitter.
