"The night is dark and it's full of terrors," raps Talib Kweli, borrowing a line from Game of Thrones' resident enchantress, Melisandre, for the opening line of "Lord of Light." Premiering today, it's the first single off of HBO's razor-sharp pairing of musicians with themes and samples from the brutal television spectacular, Catch the Throne: The Mixtape Volume 2. "I am a big fan of the books and the series,” Talib Kweli says in the album's press release. “As an MC, I’m not adverse to the concept of battles and ability to tell compelling stories and the Game of Thrones series does just that. It is the reason I wanted to be a part of this mixtape.”
The track makes its debut alongside the announcement of Catch the Throne's album artists, whose ranks include Anthrax, Estelle, Kap G, Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, Melanie Fiona, Method Man, MNDR, Mushroomhead, Raquel Sofia, Snoop Dogg, Stalley, Talib Kweli, Ty Dolla $ign, and Yandel. It's still definitely cold out, but with the mixtape's March 17 drop approaching fast (released free via Soundcloud), and Season 5 (April 12) approaching even faster, it warms our stallion hearts to say that winter's coming twice this year.
