Liverpool Beat Middlesbrough After 30 Penalty Kicks

Liverpool beat Middlesbrough after nearly 20 minutes of penalty kicks.

Middlesbrough F.C., of England's second-tier League Championship, took Liverpool as far as a game of English pro soccer has ever gone before finally losing a marathon penalty kick session. According to the BBC, this League Cup game, which Liverpool won 14-13 on penalties, tied the highest scoring shootout in English league soccer history.

Middlesbrough and Liverpool played to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes and each side scored in extra time to make it 2-2, so penalties were required. And required. And required. At one point, the sides combined to make 20 straight penalties. Even the goalkeepers had to shoot (they scored on each other). In all, only three shots went wide and it was Albert Adomah who missed the final shot, sending Liverpool through after nearly 20 minutes of rising tension.
