The two-week optimism transfusion that was London 2012 came to an end this weekend. Saturday and Sunday saw more medals for Britain, while the Closing Ceremony was essentially a worse version of the Opening one. In sporting terms, the weekend was most notable for Mo Farah's second gold medal – this time in the men's 5000m – and Usain Bolt and his Jamaican mates smashing the world record for the men's 4 x 100m relay. We'll have a full review of the Closing Ceremony on the site soon, but suffice to say it didn't quite match up to Danny Boyle's opening extravaganza and everyone on Twitter was quick to alert the world to that fact. A 37-year-old man named Stuart Hazell will appear in court accused of murdering 12-year-old schoolgirl Tia Sharp. After a police search last week, Tia's body was found in her grandmother's house in New Addington, south-east London, on Friday. Her grandmother Christine was also arrested on suspicion of murder but has since been released without charge on police bail. Two earthquakes in north-west Iran are believed to have killed 300 people and injured thousands more. The quakes, which measured 6.4 and 6.3 on the Richter scale, flattened villages in the rural part of the country and now hospitals are struggling to cope with the influx of wounded. News

Saudi Arabia is gonna build an industrial city solely for a population of women. The aim is to give female Arabs greater independence while not contravening Sharia law. The construction of the mini-city – sited in the pre-existing city of Hofuf – is being funded by a team of Saudi businesswomen, and will create nearly 5,000 jobs in textiles, pharmaceuticals and food processing. "I'm sure that women can demonstrate their efficiency in many aspects and clarify the industries that best suit their interests, nature and ability," one of the city's planners told The Guardian.
