The Hand-Cranked Hologram Is a Throwback to the Future

We're calling it "Ye olde holographic display."

Past and future go on a blind date in new media artist Chris Summers' Hand-Cranked Hologram, a sculpture which channels Victrola and "Peeping-Tom" machines with a Princess Leia twist. The setup is simple, but effective: crank the handle to activate a vertically-facing screen, which projects a blue semi-nude within four panes of glass. Voila, the kind of magic that would have had you run out of town in the early 1900s.

Hand Cranked Hologram was originally designed in 2013, but Summers recently released a demonstration of the interactive sculpture in action, which you can watch below. When he's not crossing timelines, he makes new media art tents, takes stylistic photos, and designs creative spaces. He also manages a virtual art gallery called Custom Tundra Gallery, which you can explore through a VR headset (or on your computer screen) here.
