Xiu Xiu's Reworked Version of "Into the Night" Captures All the Horror and Beauty of the Twin Peaks Soundtrack

The band has covered the entire Twin Peaks soundtrack for their upcoming Record Store Day release.

Photo courtesy of Xiu Xiu Every aspect of Twin Peaks, from its fashion sensibilities to its typeface will be forever etched into American culture until the end of time. But the most poignant element by itself will probably forever be the soundtrack written by David Lynch and Angelo Badalementi. Xiu Xiu is keenly aware of this, which is why they're releasing an entire album of covers of the Twin Peaks soundtrack. Today, they're premiering their cover of Julee Cruise's "Into The Night," originally a dreamy piece of music that brought to mind the feeling of Laura Palmer's spirit watching over the sleepy town. Now, Jamie Stewart and co. have added a different kind of sadness and longing into the music. Stewart's inflection is pained and haunted, in tandem with a line of chaotic guitars that creates a unique kind of sorrow, fear, and beauty in the track that wasn't there before.

Of hearing it for the first time, Stewart says "The lyrics "I search out, I search out your love," never ever fail to make me see and feel any number of much younger, more vulnerable loved ones or selves flailing in the woods alone, afraid and in the dark. It is a shatteringly effective piece of simplicity, directness and emotion. Bravo Mr. Badalamenti and Mr. Lynch."
