This is the very beach - and perhaps the very sand - where Brigitte Bardot made her international debut in 1953, breaking into the public consciousness with a scandal started by her wearing (gasp!) a bikini right here. She became a regular presence at Cannes in the 50's, crossing paths with Pablo Picasso, Gary Cooper, and her future co-star Kirk Douglas.

She made one more appearance in 1967, with then-husband Gunter Sachs, whose film was showing, and was so overwhelmed by press that she never returned.  She also divorced Sachs and retired from acting in the following three years, meaning Cannes marked both the start and end of her public career as the freewheeling face of French cinema in the 50's and 60's.
