Obama Told Jimmy Fallon That He's 'Worried About the Republican Party'

The president says that his role in the new election is to "remind the American people that this is a serious job."

Obama has been spending the last few months of his presidency basking in the overwhelming outpouring of appreciation from a nation of people who've suddenly realized how not-terrible Obama is in light of the recent election cycle.

As part of his victory lap, Obama dropped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to shoot the shit with Fallon and tape a segment for Thursday night's episode, which will also feature a performance from Madonna.

During their chat, Fallon brought up Trump's candidacy, asking the president if he thought the GOP was pleased with its nominee.

"We are," Obama said, smiling.

According to the interview transcript, Obama went on to explain that—all jokes aside, he was "worried about the Republican Party."

"I am actually not enjoying, and I haven't been enjoying over the last seven years, watching some of the things that have happened in the Republican Party … what's happened in that party culminating in this current nomination, I think is not actually good for the country as a whole.

"My hope," he continued, "is that maybe once you get through this cycle, there's some corrective action, and they get back to being a center-right party. And Democratic Party being a center-left party. And we start figuring how to work together."

Obama repeated his line again about how the presidency "isn't reality TV," and that his role in election 2016 will be to "remind the American people that this is a serious job."

Watch a clip from the interview via CNN above, and catch the whole thing on The Tonight Show Thursday evening at 11:35 PM on NBC.
