Melbourne Punks Grotto Are Done But their Legacy Lives On With ‘Manic Evil’

Listen to "Bog," a final track from the puerile punks.

Snotty Melbourne punk band Grotto is dead. But when the bloated and decomposing body was dragged from the Maribyrnong River a few weeks ago, the Manic Evil EP popped out from one of the many stab wounds.

The five-tracks, released on vocalist and guitarist Adam Ritchie's Pissfart Records, mix hardcore murder punk and metal with a harrowing demonic veil. Like a cross between Lumpy and the Dumpers and Bolt Thrower this is music that is pure shabbiness.

Limited to 300 copies, the first 150 come with a patch soaked in blood and dirty Maribyrnong River water. Listen to the track "Bog" which Adam describes as an evil stool.

"It's about a creature coming out of your shit and feeding on your mind. You always knew it was there but you passed it off as paranoia and as the reality sets in you become the bog itself."

The band will be sadly missed. Their demo was one of the best of 2015 and their live shows would get real rowdy, real fast. "I fucking loved being in this band," explains Adam. "It really gave me the opportunity to experiment and put my head into a very evil place. Expressing myself in that way was very cathartic."

'Manic Evil' is available now through Pissfart Records.
