An Anonymous Activist is Sending These Trucks Across the US to Protest Gun Violence

On March 24, people gathered by the thousands to protest gun violence and demand gun control legislation at the March for Our Lives in Washington D.C. and sister marches across the country. America’s youth, specifically the teens who survived the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida, are behind the renewed push for reforms to firearm access after previous attempts have failed.

While the masses took to the streets with chanting and signs, an anonymous activist took a page from the book of Frances McDormand’s character from Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri by protesting the government’s lack of action on gun-related deaths using mobile LED billboards on trucks.

The space on the billboards is animated with bold white text that constantly changes on a black background. Some of the words illuminated on the screens read like headlines such as “American Students Shot” or “The President Backs Away.” Other messages sound like fragments of a tragic poem, such as “Stay With Me Child” or “Shield Him.” Each statement packs a powerful punch as the country grapples with the role guns play in American society.

The first wave of this project launched on March 9 in New York City, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Tallahassee, Palm Beach and Miami. Following the first rollout, a second fleet launched on March 16 in Chicago, Dallas, Brooklyn, Miami and Los Angeles. The third fleet was deployed in Atlanta, Chicago, and Washington D.C. on March 24 in support of the student-led March for Our Lives demonstrations happening nationwide.

All the vehicles had three of their sides covered with the screens and driven through each of the various cities from midday to evening. The trucks purposefully took routes in front of government buildings, landmarks, dense traffic areas and other heavily populated or culturally relevant locations.

According to a source close the creator of this moving installation, the hope is to keep the demonstrations going either on a weekly or bi-monthly basis to amplify the urgency for gun control now.
