Chelsea Edges Out Southampton In a Series of Pretty Goals

Hiddink remains undefeated.

Chelsea hasn't lost a match since Leicester, 11 games ago—with five wins and six draws in between—and they weren't going to start today. After dropping Jose Mourinho for an undefeated Guus Hiddink, the team just seems to be a bit more… buoyant. And today, they didn't let a first-half lead by Southampton get them down.

The above goal was ushered in by Shane Long, who took advantage of Chelsea's defensive flub. The clearance was ugly, as the defender heads the ball straight to Long, leaving him to rip a hole in the fabric of Chelsea's character.

But Chelsea had the nerve to patch things up, as Cesc Fàbregas took a crack at a thin margin of clearance between Southampton defenders. It might've been intended as a cross, but the ball curled elegantly into the far post, much to the keeper's chagrin. What's more impressive about this one is the touch on the end line to keep the ball in play. Heroics.

And, as if Chelsea needed any more luck, they were awarded a corner kick in the 88th minute, which Branislav Ivanovic headed home with perfect height and precision:

Goodnight, sweet Southampton. You played valiantly enough. Chelsea's streak lives to see another day.
