Hurricane Irma Now a Category Five Storm as It Heads for Land

The “extremely dangerous” hurricane is forecast to pass over or near the northern Leeward Islands and could veer to the US mainland later in the week.

As Texas and Louisiana continue to reel from the devastating impact of Harvey, an even stronger hurricane is causing alarm as it rapidly gathers force on its approach towards the Caribbean islands.

Hurricane Irma was upgraded to a Category Five storm Tuesday, with maximum sustained winds of 175 mph (281 kph) expected as it moves towards the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said Tuesday. The "extremely dangerous" hurricane is forecast to pass over or near the northern Leeward Islands as early as the end of Tuesday, and on current modeling, could veer to the north towards the US mainland later in the week.
