Skinnyfromthe9's "Back When I Was Broke" Is an Ode to Perseverance

The Jersey-bred rapper adds onto his catalog of melodic trap anthems.

New Jersey-bred and LA-based rapper Skinnyfromthe9 hit the radars of most melodic trap lovers at the close of 2017 when he dropped his song, "Love Blast." The song's lullaby-like qualities make you remember most of its lyrics after the first listen, and its theme of being unappreciated before "making it" is one that plenty of people can connect to at some level. That skill to create resonant anthems is what has helped Skinny, and many of his peers, gain such loyal fanbases online.

Today, we're premiering the 22-year-old's new song and video, "Back When I Was Broke." In theory, the track doesn't trail too far away from the message in "Love Blast." Except on this one, Skinny touches on knowing that he'd end up in this position, even when he was spending a period of his pre-teen years in and out of homeless shelters. The video shows him bouncing around with friends at a decked out house in Los Angeles. "This song is motivation for everybody. You can do anything you set your mind to," he said in an email conversation. "If you dream it you can do it. I’ve been through it all in my childhood. My life gradually got better starting in middle school. Before that I was broke, homeless, poor you name it. Once I started getting fame and money anyone whoever laughed at me or doubted me, wanted to be my friend. I told them what was gonna happen and it’s happening." Watch "Back When I Was Broke" above.
