Blue Jays Officially Ink MVP Josh Donaldson to New Two-Year Deal

The Blue Jays and American League MVP Josh Donaldson have avoided arbitration and agreed to a two-year, $28.65 million deal.

The Toronto Blue Jays announced Wednesday that they've agreed to a two-year, $28.65 million deal with third baseman Josh Donaldson.

Donaldson will earn $11.65 million this upcoming season and $17 million in 2017 in a deal that buys out two of the American League MVP's three arbitration-eligible years. After bashing a career-high 41 homers with a .939 OPS and AL-leading 123 RBI, Donaldson was slated to receive a significant raise from the $4.3 million he made last season. As a Super Two player, Donaldson will still have one more year of arbitration eligibility in 2018 before hitting free agency for the first time.

The Vikings star was coming back to Toronto either way, but this gives the club some cost certainly over the next two seasons and ensures both parties don't have to go through the arbitration process for at least the next two years. Donaldson lost his case last season. He was set for a hearing next week after the two sides exchanged salary differences under $500,000 apart. The 30-year-old was seeking $11.8 million for 2016, while Toronto countered with a figure of $11.35 million.

Donaldson was 8.7 WAR last season (third best in the majors, according to Fangraphs) in his first year with the Blue Jays after four seasons in Oakland.
