Inside Patrick Kane's Ridiculous 26-Game Point Streak

Patrick Kane is showing no signs of slowing down.

Patrick Kane is lighting up the NHL and showing no signs of slowing down. The Blackhawks winger extended his league-best point streak to 26 games with an assist in Chicago's 4-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday.

Here's a look inside his remarkable streak:

  • Kane's 26-game point streak is the longest in the post-lockout era and the most since Mats Sundin during the 1992-93 season. Sundin was in his third season and playing for the now-defunct Quebec Nordiques when he recorded a point in 30 consecutive games. Kane has already set records for the longest point streak by a Blackhawks player and for an American-born player.

  • Kane's streak is the 11th longest in NHL history. If he matches Sundin, it'll mark the sixth time in history a player has had a streak as long as 30 games. Wayne Gretzky did it three times, while Sundin and Mario Lemieux each accomplished the feat once.

  • Kane has recorded a point in all but two of his 31 games this season. He's projected to end the season with 122 points, which would be a career high, and the most in a single season since both Jaromir Jagr (123) and Joe Thornton (125) eclipsed the 120-point mark during the 2005-06 campaign.

  • Kane has 40 points during the streak. Only Dallas Stars teammates Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn have as many points on the season. Put another way, the 40 points are more than teammate and captain Jonathan Toews (17) and Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby (19) have combined for this season.

  • As impressive as Kane's feat is, especially in this low-scoring environment, he would need to double his streak to set the NHL record of 51 straight games with a point held by Gretzky. Still, Kane's streak is extra impressive when you consider the offensive climate he's playing in. Scoring is way down and goalie save percentage is on the rise. Teams are averaging under 2.70 goals per game for the first time since the 2003-04 season, down more than a goal per contest compared to when Gretzky set the record as a member of the Edmonton Oilers. Gretzky scored a whopping 153 points during his streak, and finished the campaign with his second 200-plus point season (205).

  • Kane has factored in on 53.3 percent of the 75 goals the Blackhawks have scored during his streak, which is a higher amount than Gretzky (51.2) during his 51-game run.

  • No other player in the NHL this season has recorded a double-digit point streak. Erik Karlsson, David Krejci and Bobby Ryan are tied for the second-longest streaks at nine games.

Kane has the Blackhawks sitting in second place in the Central Division, behind only the NHL-best Stars. Leading the NHL in points and ranking second in goals, Kane—at a little more than a quarter of the way through the season—is a frontrunner for the Hart Trophy, the league's MVP award. But a bigger question than whether he deserves the award or not—because his on-ice play certainly makes him among the most worthy candidates—is whether voters will hold his off-ice issues against him? Time will tell.
