This was a really weird play in the seventh inning of what was a 2-2, decisive Game 5 between the Blue Jays and Rangers. With Shin-Soo Choo up with two outs, Aaron Sanchez missed up high for ball two. On the throw back, Russell Martin hit Choo in the hand, or hit Choo's bat, and the ball deflected down the third base line. Rougned Odor was on third base and broke for home and scored easily.Initially home plate umpire Dale Scott ruled the play dead and told Odor to get back to third base, but after conferring with the rest of the umpiring crew, they awarded Odor home, giving the Rangers a 3-2 lead. Obviously this upset John Gibbons, the Blue Jays, and the rest of Toronto, so the play was officially reviewed. In the meantime, Toronto fans started throwing trash on the field.
When all was said and done, the ruling on the field was upheld because Choo was standing in the batters box and did not intentionally interfere with the ball, which means the ball was still live. However, it was a little murky because the home plate umpire pretty clearly called time out as all this was happening, so everyone stopped playing. Nevertheless, Russell Martin was charged with an error and the Rangers nabbed a 3-2 lead.
The Rangers gave the Jays the lead right back, however, in the bottom half of the seventh, when they allowed the Blue Jays to load the bases on three straight errors and score the tying run before a 3-run blast from Jose Bautista gave Toronto a 6-3 lead. Look at this fucking bat flip. Look at it! Absolutely marvelous.
After this, the benches cleared and fans starting throwing things on the field again; the Rangers actually wanted one fan behind home plate kicked out. Baseball is crazy.[FS1]
