The Melbourne Storm Wasn’t Very Good

Rain??? In VICTORIA??? Groundbreaking.

Sorry to be insensitive to those people who did experience flooding, but the Melbourne Storm (#MelbourneStorm) wasn’t very good. It underwhelmed. It did not deliver much drama. The Bureau of Meteorology predicted that people could die, okay? I received not one, not two, but three emergency warning text messages from the SES. There was even, briefly, a live blog on the Guardian, which they sheepishly gave up on about three hours in when it became apparent that the “storm” was actually just quite a lot of rain.

Rain, in Melbourne? What next, latte art and laneway restaurants? A Federal Greens MP? A crippling Sydney-related inferiority complex? Literally every person in this cloudy grey excuse for a capital city is prepared for the daily reality of surprise wetness. People walk around in summer wearing jackets. I’ve never witnessed a single Melburnian on the street be caught out without an umbrella. You wake up and expect to be disappointed by the weather here, honestly.

Some might say that the Bureau of Meteorology should be at least a little embarrassed after predicting a literal apocalypse late last week, but the weather people are sticking to their guns. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Victorian BOM manager Dr Andrew Tupper said the storm had panned out exactly as expected.

“The way that it’s panned out has been similar to what we were predicting,” he told news.com.au.

“It was certainly the kind of event worth preparing for…If we had our time again, we would put out (warnings) with similar language.”

Can we expect literally anything to happen, storm-wise? Just a little bit of lightning? Some cool Day After Tomorrow-style cloud formations? Short answer, no. But some areas of regional Victoria are under significant flood threat still—so if you’re in the vicinity of a river, be sure to regularly check for updates.
