Shawn Horcoff Hit with 20-Game Ban for Violating NHL's PED Policy

The suspension will cost Horcoff more than $357,000 in salary.

Anaheim Ducks forward Shawn Horcoff was handed a 20-game suspension Tuesday for violating the terms of the NHL's performance enhancing substances program. The suspension is without pay, costing the 37-year-old more than $357,000.

As a result of the suspension, Horcoff is required to enter the league's program for substance abuse and behavioral health for evaluation and possible treatment.

Horcoff denied knowingly taking any banned substances in a statement released Tuesday.

While recovering from an injury I suffered this past fall, I tried a treatment that I believed would help speed up the healing process. Although I was unaware that this treatment was not permitted under NHL rules that is no excuse whatsoever. I should have done my research and I should have checked with the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program's doctors. I accept full responsibility for my actions, and I am sorry. Throughout my entire career I have felt genuinely blessed and honored to play the great game of hockey and I regret the impact that this may have on my team and our fans.

Ducks general manager Bob Murray said he supports both Horcoff and the league's PED program, but declined further comment.

Horcoff is tentatively scheduled to be eligible for return March 11 against the Blues. The date could be pushed back pending on when the Ducks' recently postponed game versus the Capitals is rescheduled for.

Horcoff, a 15-year veteran, has six goals, 10 points and 30 penalty minutes over 45 games with the Ducks this season.
