If you've ever used a weaponized wig, a magnetic condom or "PyonPyon" spring shoes, you've got Yoshiro Nakamatsu to thank for making your life a little, well, "easier" might not be the right word. How about the karaoke machine, a digital watch, floppy disk, CDs or DVDs? He came up with all of 'em. Dr. NakaMats, as he's known, a kind of mashup of Thomas Edison and Willy Wonka, began inventing at the age of five and is the mastermind behind over a world-record breaking 3,000 patents.

Back in 2010 Motherboard traveled to Japan and had a peek around Dr. NakaMats' lab in Tokyo. We learned about the mad scientist's inventions, his underwater brainstorm sessions, and his quest to inspire technological creativity in others.
