A real estate company owned by GOP candidate Donald Trump rented office space in Manhattan to an Iranian bank with ties to terrorist groups, according to a report from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists released on Monday.

The bank, Bank Melli, occupied more than 8,000 square feet in the Trump-owned GM building on Fifth Avenue beginning in 1998. In 1999, the US Treasury Department declared the bank to be owned by the Iranian government, but Trump continued to rent Bank Melli space until 2003.

The US has alleged that Bank Melli helped funnel money into the hands of terrorist groups and also aided Iran's nuclear program.

The US also had a trade embargo banning businesses from working with the government of Iran at the time. As the Daily Beast notes, some US companies were given exemptions, though its unclear if Trump Organization was one of those companies.
