Watch Mexican Knives’ New Video for “Killer Snake”

And don't pee on relics from the recent past.

A few years ago, I was walking around in the East Village and saw a guy peeing on a payphone while talking on his cell phone. Granted, the payphone stand was one of those double ones with little walls separating the two phones that created some semblance of privacy—kind of like a urinal. Maybe the guy saw it and made that connection and, depending on his level of intoxication, may have even confused it for an actual urinal. Or perhaps he thought talking on his cell phone while peeing on the payphone was the perfect camouflage for his public urination, which, according to an episode of Seinfeld that I have seen, is a crime. Whatever his thought process was, this wee tableau of whizzing—this pee-pee mise-en-scène—really struck me as an example of the cell phone's total and merciless victory over the payphone and landline.

Thankfully, the new music video for "Killer Snake" from Detroit garage rockers Mexican Knives has shown me that payphones and cell phones can still coexist peacefully in today's world, pee-free. And that despite falling on some hard times and going bankrupt, the city of Detroit is still cranking out top-notch rock 'n' roll.

Keep a lookout for Mexican Knives’ new album coming out this fall, which they'll follow with an East Coast/Midwest tour.
