Listen to This Two-Hour Mix of Aussie Rare and Unreleased House and Techno

Sleep D, Mall Grab, Zanzibar Chanel, The Rockmelons and more.

Ken Oath is Sydney's newest record label. Run by DJ Earl Grey (Nik Thorup) and James Greville, the label's focus is electronic music. With releases set for the coming months, and a penchant for toasting great local music, Ken Oath put together a two-hour-long mix of unreleased, soon-to-be-released and rare tracks.

Featuring Zanzibar Chanel, Sleep D, Mall Grab, Cale Sexton, Pelvis, Tuff Sherm & Patch Free, JNETT, Underground City Loop and more, this mix is an out-and-out tribute to Australia's blossoming electronic scene. Keep an eye out for the odd thing out—an old Rockmelons track from 1987.

Listen to the killer mix, and read our interview with the boys below.

What are you about?

Ken Oath is about quality music. We don't want to limit ourselves to any specific mood or genre although for now we are 100% Australian. This may change in the future (or not!)

What do you want to achieve as a label?

On the to-do list right now is getting the first couple pressed while also keeping our strict Soundcloud trawling regime in tact. We are also going to be throwing some parties in the future and look out for the limited edition Ken Oath stubby holder.

Who's your label crush?

Locally: Butter Sessions, Moontown Records, Analogue Attic, Efficient Space and Superconscious all are releasing some amazing music while also maintaining a strong visual aesthetic. Internationally we're both really into Early Sounds from Italy and of course Mood Hut from Vancouver.

Why does Aussie underground house and techno rule?

It's just better when it's in your backyard.

Where in the world are you today?

Right now I'm on the West Coast of the USA sourcing records and pizza and also exploring some national parks.

Favourite record of all time?

The Fugees - "Ready or Not."

What's the last record you bought?

Too many in New York. Notable find was Basil Hardhouse - "City Streets" on Nu Groove.

What are your thoughts behind the mix? / What kind of feelings do you want people to conjure from it?

I guess this mix has been brewing for a long time. Finding a great track by someone from Australia was always more exciting than finding one from overseas for some reason. It's great when these producers are from your city as well - you can actually meet them, give them the cuddle they deserve and play their tracks to a home crowd.

I usually prefer my mixes to have a more specific aesthetic but because of the place-based theme of this one, that was harder to achieve. I'd like to note that there is so much more of this music out there that I wanted to include but I doubt anyone these days has the patience to listen to a 3 hour mix.

What's to come from Earl Grey/Ken Oath?
