Russell Martin Injured His Knee after Spending Too Much Time in the Sauna

Baseball injuries are the goddamn weirdest. Sure, there are plenty of 'normal' injuries that occur throughout the course of a season—like pitchers blowing out their arms or hitters breaking bones in their hand after getting hit by a pitch. But, every year, we hear of bizarre injuries that seem to disproportionately affect baseball players a lot more than athletes from other sports.

Guys suffering oblique injuries sneezing; getting frostbite from falling asleep with an ice pack on (Hey, Rickey!); tearing a knee after tripping on a sprinkler; hurting yourself while fluffing your son's pillow; dislocating your thumb while putting on socks; breaking a rib vomiting; dislocating your shoulder trying to rip a phonebook in half… the list goes on. Yes, these are all real.

Our latest contender for Weirdest Baseball Injury of the Year Award goes to Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin, who is expected to miss at least a few games after a lengthy sauna stay proved to be more problematic than he could have ever imagined. Martin spent too much time in the sauna Thursday, got lightheaded, and then fell in the shower and hurt his left knee.

He's expected to avoid a stint on the disabled list, so Martin should get a good laugh out of this like the rest of us. And he probably doesn't need to worry about catapulting to the top spot of weird 2016 injuries, thanks to Brewers lefty Will Smith, who tore a ligament in his knee taking off his shoe, and Matt Harvey, who suffered a bladder infection as a result of holding in his pee too much.
