Check Out The Caulfield Beats' Hackney Grown Acid

Garage electronics for the post-acid generation.

We don't know about you, but we don't often associate canal boats in Hackney with acid house. Lawrence Northall and Molly Dixon, AKA The Caulfield Beats, are bringing the halcyon days of '88 back to the Haggerston Riviera with a new four track EP that's a sonic statement of intent. Mexican Smoke, streaming exclusively here on THUMP, is a churning, chunky, bilious slab of mangled 303 manipulation.

Lead track "90's Love (Acid Pt. II)" was described by the guys over at Boiler Room as a "gurgling trip-out," and we'd be hard pressed to disagree. The title track is a molasses thick wade through the murk of early morning clubbing, all wub and thwack. "Believe" is a slightly more tender affair, blending their cone-breaking bass with prime sadlad vocals and the kind of sweet synth stabs that sound like every good record Kompakt ever put out. The record ends with the bludgeoning "Real Sun" which ramps the tempo and the intensity back up, leaving you a bit sweaty and a bit tingly. The group describe their sound as "garage electronics" and you know what? You'll find us in a pair of oily overalls tinkering with The Caulfield Beats for quite some time.

It seems like we're about to experience acid house's second second summer of love, so get to know these guys. The future's looking as bright as it did when Phuture first emerged.

The Mexican Smoke EP is out on May 24th — pre-order it here.
