Say Hello to Brogan Bentley's "Goodbye"

The San Francisco music-maker combines drum and bass, soul, and the spirit world on this new track.

San Francisco's Bentley Brogan drops his debut album today and to celebrate his atmospheric, sometimes somnambulant, synth-dappled brand of soul-tinged electronic music we're premiering his latest tune, "Goodbye," above. This track ups the ante somewhat, with a drum and bass skip and kick and the female vocals that locate the listener in a club where everyone's wearing cycling shorts and a lot of gold.

Brogan had this to say about his composition: "A dear friend played me a disco song from the early 80s. The intro was so spacious and lush, all at once; soul-filled female vocals and deep, classic, piano chords. I knew without thinking that I wanted to take that and create an entire song from it. I felt like I was soaring, much in the way early jungle music makes me feel.

"The most distinguishable lyric was "goodbye," so that became its title and was fittingly placed as the album's closing track. It just fell into place. The same is true for the entirety of The Snake: sonics and melody unfold and expose themselves as they see fit. It's a matter of being attuned to the essence and listening, very closely, for what's being called for. Music is everywhere, plucked from the ether as it makes itself known. To help bring form to something that was once without is revelatory. The direct communication with the spirit world."

Dang. Shit just got deep.

Brogan Bentley's debut album, The Snake, is out now via Leaving Records.
