It's called Freak City for a reason.

Let's take a moment of silence to thank the haters for being the canaries in the coal mine and telling us where we should go. Not because they're right, but because they're wrong. I'd heard Freak City had a bit of a rep--for what, I'm not quite sure--and that it might be best to steer clear of this three-floor Hollywood Boulevard emporium of absolute outrageousness--fashion, performance, art--without any shit vibes. This spaceship has been around for a few years, and has been docked in its current location, a former department store, for almost a year. Tourists walk in off the street and get reallllly confused, as there is no order, no sense of urgency to consume, and no authority at all in there.

At night it's a club, where you enter through a busted alley and try not to get sewage on your heels. Last Saturday Egyptian Lover and Arabian Prince headlined a real weird night. At one point I found myself dirty dancing with a gal wearing a lace teddy inside out with boobs four cups too big for her, a teddy bear backpack, orthodontic braces, peroxide blond hair, and a googly eye bindi. Here's what else happened.

Gettin' manicures with Ron Rege Jr. and Diva Dompé (who, btw, I just discovered through Googling has a whole appreciation blog dedicated to her--awesome, and well-deserved).

Started gettin' a little "LA" in here…

This little lady saved it. Dressing like an 80-year-old = good idea.

Signature dance move

You know a party's legit when a cowboy from Mexico shows up.

There's a gallery on the third floor, where rumor has it there's a rabbit just running around.

Amphibian goth-dub high priestess  … best thing I've heard/seen in a long time.

There were all kinds here…

Even Douchetopia showed up. A cue to start thinking about heading out…

Thank you, Freak City. Goodnight!
