I don't know if your father actually is a detective from a 1970s cop drama, but in his head he almost certainly is the kind of guy to kick open a door, flash a badge, and shout "OK you suckers, party's over—put your hands in the air and no funny business" without messing his moustache, or the ironed crease down the front of his flares a single inch.
