Van de vroege dagen van MTV tot aan de Super Bowl, er is geen twijfel mogelijk dat Madonna de popcultuur vormgegeven heeft. Maar wat sommigen dreigen te vergeten, is dat haar muziek geboren is in de dance-scene van de vroege jaren tachtig in New York City – voornamelijk in de legendarische club Dancetaria. Eigenlijk is Madonna een dance-artiest.
Aankomende november is het dertig jaar geleden dat “Like a Virgin” gereleased werd, Madonna’s eerste wereldwijde hit en platinum-selling single. Onlangs vierde de Material Girl haar zesenvijftigste verjaardag. Tussen nu en november viert THUMP haar impact en die van haar discografie op de elektronische muziek met Madonna Mondays.

Van haar samenwerking met house iconen als Jellybean Benitez en Nile Rodgers tot het supporten van voorheen onbekende elektronica sterren als Mirwais en William Orbit – Madonna’s catalogus is een popweergave van dertig jaar elektronische muziek. Zelfs toen de radio na de vroege jaren 2000 haar muziek niet meer draaide, scoorde ze nog steeds dance-hits, met dank aan haar trouwe fans in clubland: ze scoorde een ongeëvenaarde zesenvijftig top-tien genoteerde hits in de Billboard Dance/Club charts (zevenenvijftig als je haar bijdrage op Britney Spears’ “Me Against the Music” meetelt, die hier niet in is opgenomen).
Toch zijn sommige hits beter dan andere. In overleg met Madonna experts, dance connoiseurs en een geselecteerde set superfans, hebben we ze gerangschikt van de beste tot de slechtste. Van het naar de underground lonkende “Vogue”, tot het haast spirituele “Like a Prayer” en het disco-sampelende “Hung Up”, is het duidelijk dat Madonna het beste werk levert wanneer ze dichtbij haar dansvloer-wortels blijft. Wat haar meest recente single “Turn Up the Radio” betreft… no comment
