After steadily dropping albums (always for free) over the last decade, Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights, recently took to Twitter in late February with a cryptic message alluding to the fact he’ll no longer be conventionally releasing music on albums. Coming as a shock to his legion of die-hard fans who may have pegged his words as a signifier that he’d be stepping back from releasing music entirely—today we can all rest easy, as he’s just dropped his first track in around three years.
Dropped for free on his website in conjunction with a new video that was filmed at the debut of his very own Pretty Lights music festival in Telluride last year last year, as well as on Spotify, “Only Yesterday” will surely please longtime fans of the artist’s penchant for silky grooves and soulful vocal sampling. For those who’ve caught the artist on tour throughout the last year, they’ll probably recognize the track as a highlight of his recent sets.
