Umpire Ejects Heckler in Philly, Knows a 69 Reference When He Hears One

In the sixth inning in Philadelphia last night, Bob Davidson ejected a fan from behind the visitors dugout for heckling and generally behaving like a drunken lout. Davidson called timeout before Luis Garcia’s second pitch to Denard Span and stalked over to the Giants bench. Initially he looked like he was going to give Angel Pagan or someone else in the Giants dugout a few choice words, but it soon became clear he was coming over to deal with an unruly fan who had been loudly yelling “You suck!” at Davidson for some time.

That’s not the worst thing in the world to say to an umpire—Davidson has surely heard worse—but after the game, the home-plate umpire spoke to reporters about the incident and the “you suck” wasn’t what triggered the ejection; it was a 69 reference.

Two things stick out in the transcript: first, Bob Davidson said twice that it was the 69th St. reference that did the fan in so he clearly knows the most famous sex number when he hears it and, second, he’s got a pretty good sense of humor about being an umpire.

Security—and the police, it appears—went over to the man and while he clearly wasn’t happy about it, he did not cause a (further) scene, and peacefully left his seat.
