Every time Carlo Lio, the Toronto techno tastemaker, releases on Dubfire’s SCI+TEC imprint, it can’t help but feel like a proper homecoming.
After all—as THUMP previously explored—it was Dubfire who first helped open the doors for Lio to the global spotlight. He’s also frequently gone on record to cite Lio’s deep-pulsing, chuggy DJ as one of the most mimicked in techno today.

Dubfire’s admiration is warranted yet again on Lio’s latest SCI+TEC offering, the devilish Type-O, which is due for release November 20. Leaning on the darker side of his recent work, it follows the T.O. native’s previous SCI+TEC banger, Master of the Black Arts. With its brutal drums, rippling tones, and sinister melody, the EP’s title track delivers enough for after-hours thrill seekers to absolutely lose their minds.
