CHVRCHES are three Prince-obsessed Scots that used to be in überindie Evening Session bands like The Twilight Sad and Aereogramme before they thought, oh why don’t we just make songs with big choruses and lush melodies and bits you can hum while you’re waiting for the DLR. So that’s what they did and waddayouknow, they got signed to Virgin, came fifth in that BBC sound thing and won an award for being the best at SXSW. There’s probably a lesson in that somewhere, but until we work it out, why don’t you listen to their outstanding new single “Gun”: it’s full of 808 handclaps, squeaky synths and even has an old-fashioned fade out.
