Music, like most creative endeavors, was primarily seen as a vehicle for self-awareness, meditation, and recovery. New age musicians were looking to have a relationship with something beyond the material world.
Nobody I talk to under the age of 40 knows the work of Neil Winokur, which is odd in light of the 68-year-old photographer’s achievements: His work has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the LA County Museum.
Homeless by choice, he can support himself by paying close attention to the ground under his feet.
