What do Bill Callahan and Machinedrum have in common? Absolutely fucking nothing, except that they’re both on this Bill Patrick mix. The perennial troublemaker stepped out of the confines of house and techno to compile a collection of tracks that are held together by aesthetic and narrative more than anything closely resembling genre, and the result is a sweeping 106 minutes of swooned-out music discovery.
When he’s selecting away from the dance floor, Patrick totally changes the way he approaches mixes. “I’m sure there’s some people out there listening to techno records all day everyday, but that shit’s gotta be boring,” Bill tells THUMP. “Imagine going through a breakup or falling in love, dealing with a death or some other dramatic stuff and throwing on a 4/4 beat. I don’t know, it’s just lacking that raw emotion I find in other music. I love it for what it is, an escape. I’m not naive to think you can’t have an emotional connection to house music. It’s kinda my job to make that connection for people. But in general, life’s too complicated to be pigeonholed by music.”

Before you get your melon twisted, here’s a little guidance on what’s up in this mix from Bill himself: “I put a lot of my favorite songs of the year on this mix. So it’s kind of a “Best of 2014” mix with some odd bits thrown in for fun. There’s this Aphex Twin song I found recently that I’m not sure many have heard. It’s “Avril 14th” played in reverse. The original is obviously one of his best works and it says something about the genius of Richard James when you can play a song in reverse and it comes out sounding this beautiful. It kinda takes on a whole new life of its own. There’s a very raw bootleg of one of my favorite Radiohead songs done by King Krule. I’m a huge fan of his and everything he does.”
“I also put a song by this artist named L own, who is basically a Burial clone. My friend Jamie Fry found this guy and we had a moment where we promised not to give it to anyone because we wanted him to be our own personal Burial. I haven’t been into the recent stuff he’s put out and this L own guy is on the whole Untrue tip, so I was in heaven when I heard it. Usually I would be turned off by such a blatant rip off and lack of originality, but in this case I let it slide cus I love the old Burial sound so much.”
