You know that love note they always tell you to write and tear up, but you send anyway? And then you find out that Susie Harrington already has a boyfriend, but it’s too late, because you already slipped the letter into her locker before P.E.? Ok, so maybe that scenario has only happened to some of us, but the same thing just happened to Sam Allardyce—sort of.
Allardyce spent a sum total of 67 days as manager of the England National Team, before being caught in a sting operation during which he advised fake businessmen how to circumvent the FA’s transfer regulations. Needless to say, after the news was leaked of his backdoor dealings, Big Sam didn’t last long.

But he did have enough time, however, to send off a personally signed postcard to all of England’s players, telling them, “Our journey has begun with our first win together,” postmarked on the same day that he left the job—players received the postcards yesterday. His sign-off? “Looking forward to seeing you soon.” The irony is thick like a delicious pint of wine.
But maybe we shouldn’t ridicule The Fates’ cruel hand for Big Sam. Allardyce did leave England undefeated, after all. Best Manager ever.
