Episode one of The Vice Guide to Liberia finally launches on VBS today, and to celebrate, police and members of the Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY), a student outfit from the poor African nation, smashed each other up this weekend in Monrovia. Violent clashes are pretty traditional Liberian events. Decades of civil wars and military coups have left it in a permanent state of anarchy where former child soldiers, grizzled and haunted by the age of 16, live in drug-dependent poverty. Vice‘s Andy Capper and Shane Smith headed over with some cameras and no insurance to make this movie a few months ago. Check into VBS all this week and next as we unfurl The Vice Guide to Liberia and explore how a country that was once so intimately linked with the US wound up in such sad straits.
