‘Babble Royale’ Is Like ‘Fortnite’ for Scrabble Nerds

It’s a real novelty to see how well word games and battle royale games marry.

Babble Royale combines Scrabble with battle royale games like Fortnite and Warzone, and it’s a surprisingly coherent mix.

In Babble Royale, players place letter tiles like they would in Scrabble to spell words. Unlike Scrabble, you have a health bar and you can die. The most basic explanation of how this game works is to say that you’re essentially playing Scrabble concurrently with 100 other players in an increasingly smaller and smaller space. For the time being, you can only play with random players, though the developers say that being able to play with friends is on a list of features they plan on adding.

If you spell a word that crosses over another players’, then they die. If you’re caught in the “hot zone” as the playing field shrinks, you’ll rapidly lose health until you can spell yourself back into safety. The game goes on until only one player remains.

It’s a real novelty to see how well word games and battle royale games marry. Babble Royale also has currency and power ups, giving you more advantages than you’d have in a normal Scrabble game. Normal battle royale strategies are also pretty viable here. In one game where I made it to second place, I dropped my letter away from other people and more or less stayed away from the action until it was impossible to avoid, which is also how I’ve made it into the top ten in Apex Legends.
