The Human Centipede is Definitely Not the Most Shocking Film of all Time (or Even a Shocking Film).

Last week, I wrote a blog about how The Human Centipede is definitely not the most shocking film of all time (or even a shocking film). Since then, about 8 billion people have gotten in touch to tell me about films that are way WAY more shocking that I should TOTALLY check out. Here are the three that popped up most often;

Irreversible
This little underground gem (which earned 8 million US dollars at the box office) is the film that most people tried to ‘introduce’ me to. Yup, my local HMV has a World Cinema shelf in their Special Offers department too.

I suppose, in theory,  the fire extinguisher scene is pretty brutal. Too bad the CGI is so shitty that it’s about two notches less realistic than watching someone getting beaten to death in Grand Theft Auto 4.

Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom
Again, seriously guys? This is disturbing to you? I could see why people might have been skeeved out in the 70s, but in 2010? What is wrong with you? Do you not have the internet?

A Serbian Film
I can’t actually find this to watch anywhere online but I did read that it ends with a (SPOILER ALERT) baby getting raped to death. That sounds pretty rough. But I also heard through the gay forum grape vine (thanks google) that there’s no actual shots of erect penis’ in the film. So I’m guessing it can’t be that graphic. Wait, what’s wrong with me? I’m calling out a baby rape death scene for not being graphic enough? eugh. Maybe empathy is the problem here. In that, I don’t have any. But then, if being able to empathise with a character is what makes a movie disturbing, that would mean any film where something bad happens would be unbearable and people would be emailing me saying “You have GOT to see this movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. The Sarah Michelle Gellar character goes through SO MUCH!”.
