Every child of the ’90s probably figured augmented reality would be an integral part of life by now. While that hasn’t exactly panned out, 2017 might finally be the year AR breaks out.
When Apple drops iOS 11, the latest version of the iPhone’s operating system, later this month, everyone will have an augmented reality device at their fingertips, plus a slew of some useful (and some weird) AR apps.

For the past two months, software developers have had access to Apple’s augmented reality beta platform called “AR Kit.” Since then, they’ve created tons of splashy demos — from virtual graffiti to a virtual tape measure to a version of a-ha’s “Take on Me” — that will become available as soon as users download the iOS update.
VICE News talked to Apple about what the new technology could do for AR. Even independent enthusiasts are excited.
