San Francisco beatmaking veteran, DJ Shadow, today released another track off his forthcoming LP The Mountain Will Fall in “The Sideshow,” a collaboration with fellow Bay Area artist Ernie Fresh. The track was debuted today on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show on Apple Music, and while its old school sound palate might trigger flashbacks to playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 on PS2, it’s clear that Josh Davis is still finding thoughtful ways to refine and develop his approach.
The track was inspired by what he saw as a lack of innovation in scratch records in the last decade or so. In an interview accompanying the Beats 1 premiere, he talked about wanting to do something new with an old genre: “I thought it would be ill if I made a scratch track where none of the breaks, none of the scratches that I’m actually using are recognizable by 99% of DJs.”

The video for the album’s ruminative title track depicts a high-definition interstellar journey; over the holidays, Davis shared “Swerve,” a careening, trap-styled number which will feature on the record as an iTunes bonus track.
The Mountain Will Fall is out on Mass Appeal on June 24.
