“No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate,” said oblivious rich white guy Mitt Romney at a campaign stop in Michigan today. “They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.”
Get it? I’m white, and my opponent isn’t! Ha! My skin is the same color as yours (only white people attend Mitt Romney rallies), so nobody has ever had reason to distrust me! Ha! Haha!

The fact that Mitt Romney probably wasn’t intending to be racist or insulting only makes things worse; it’s the sort of joke he’s probably told at country clubs and galas for years now, thinking nothing of it all the while. Of course, now he’s also validating the deeply toxic GOP “birther” meme, and sending a tacit signal to all the fringy folks who seriously remain unconvinced that Barack Obama is an American citizen.
Thankfully, #FutureMittJokes quickly became a fertile dumping ground for laying into Romney and his racist quip. Here we go:
